The Raspberry Pi foundation is gradually approaching the format of a classic computer with the Raspberry Pi 400 launched recently. The idea of placing the Raspberry Pi in a box with a keyboard was not new, but the foundation seems to have succeeded with the 400. It only needs a battery and a screen (touch or not) to transform the Raspberry Pi as a real laptop. The future will tell…

In the meantime, Waveshare (official store), the well-known manufacturer of touchscreen and ePaper offers you a Bundle with 7″or 13.3″ touchscreen.

Waveshare Raspberry Pi 400 bundle with Touchscreen

The Raspberry Pi 400 is a great idea when starting out or to introduce children to programming or electronics. Indeed, it is always a risk to leave the Raspberry Pi lying around in the middle of cables and screws!

All that’s missing is the screen to start with the 400. Waveshare now offers us two bundles.

The first comes with a 7-inch HDMI 5-point touchscreen offering a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels. The second kit comes with a 13.3-inch 10-point touchscreen display offering a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. protected by a protective tempered glass pane.

Each bundle includes an official kit, here is a reminder of the content

  • Raspberry Pi 400 with UK keyboard (QWERTY without accent). Unfortunately, this is the only option available at the moment. The other versions will arrive later.

  • Mouse

  • 40 pin ribbon cable. No breadboard, too bad.

The screen kit contains

  • HDMI cable
  • A 12V mains adapter for the screen (only for the 13.3 “version)
  • Micro-USB cable for touch

Good to know, the 13.3-inch screen is equipped with integrated speakers. To take advantage of the touch function, you will need to connect the screen to the Raspberry Pi 400 via the supplied USB cable.

If you opt for the 13.3 “screen, be aware that you will need to travel with two power supplies (5V and 12V), one to power the Pi400, the other for the screen.

Waveshare markets its screens separately. They are not specific to the Raspberry Pi. All kits are available today on the Waveshare online store as well as on the AliExpress store.

The Raspberry Pi 400 kit alone (UK version only) is on sale for €129.92 (-10%). The kit with 7.7 “screen priced at €213.36 (-11%) and the 13.3″ kit priced at €286.02 (-11%). All kits are delivered without additional shipping costs. Be careful, don’t waste time, the quantities are very limited.

Should I buy this Bundle?

WaveShare’s idea of offering the Raspberry Pi 400 as a bundle with a touchscreen is very good. Waveshare is a recognized screen manufacturer and the quality of these panels is well established.

Alone, the 13.3″ screen costs €140 (on sale at €130 for Black Friday). The Raspberry Pi 400 is still very difficult to find. The first kits are marketed around 130€. So if you need ‘touch screen and you don’t have the Raspberry Pi 400 yet, Waveshare’s offer holds up.

A carrying case would have been welcome, especially for the 13.3″ version which requires 2 power supplies.

However, we can regret a price too high for a solution that is not that portable. Entry-level laptops running Linux or Windows 10 can be found for the same budget. It’s up to you to decide according to your project.
