The project is to implement communication between 2 face masks, which should only detect each other after the there is less than 2 meters between them. The microcontroller is an Arduino pro mini, and it works fine with a voltage divider giving 3.3V to the nRF module, however the only method of limiting the range we have found is to cover the module with paper and aluminium foil, which is far too big to fit on a mask. What are methods of reducing the working range of the module?

Indeed the nRF24l01 was designed for a long range (up to 1km), so it’s a bit contradictory for the idea of the designers 🙂
For this application, you could go on a more classic transmitter such as the FS1000A
