New TTGO T5-4.7 ESP32 with ePaper and LiPo or 18650 holder

Just a few days after the launch of the M5Paper by M5Stack, LilyGo has just tweeted the availability of the new TTGO T5-4.7 development board on its store. The T5-4.7 is an ESP32 development board equipped with a 5.7 “diagonal ePaper screen. Unlike the M5Paper, it is a real ESP32 development board that can be powered using a high capacity 18650 or LiPo type battery.

 

The M5Paper tablet targets a professional market or home automation dashboards. The TTGO T5-4.7 is a more classic development board sold without a protective case or battery. Marketed at € 21.56 (excluding delivery costs), it is also much cheaper.

When M5Stack‘s M5Paper was released, I ran a little poll in France to find out if you were interested in purchasing such an ESP32 board. It is still a little early to draw conclusions, but a certain trend is emerging. Since November 27, 22 of you have voted for a total of 26 responses (several possible).

Today, December 3, 2020, 35% of you love the product but find it too expensive. 20% of you are ready to order. To be honest, all of the M5Paper stock melted in one morning, you weren’t the only ones. If you are lucky enough to have been able to order one, let us know in the comments :-).

It is mainly the home automation Dashboard application that interests you in priority. I was expecting this a bit and M5Stack has done a good job of working its examples and the launch campaign in this regard.

Considering the results of this mini survey, LilyGo’s new map should be a big hit. She ticks almost all the boxes of your expectations. A more reasonable budget and an open format for editing.

The T5 offers a screen with specifications similar to the M5Paper. The 4.7-inch diagonal eInk display offers a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels in 16 gray levels (8-bit).

The screen seems tactile according to the advertisement but no mention is made of the driver, either on the product sheet or on the GitHub repository. I put the question to LilyGo to be sure.

[2020/12/03]LilyGo confirmed to me via Tweeter that a connector was placed on the board to possibly make it tactile later. LilyGo’s goal is to offer a product at an affordable price.

LilyGo has published 4 examples that use a fork of the EDPiy driver (equivalent to the EDP ​​Python library ) for ESP32 developed by vroland on the GitHub repository . No example mentions touch. The source code of the weather station featured in the advertisement is available here . It is still not enough but we can also draw inspiration from the examples of the other boards of the eInk series.

The VRoland EPDFiy library is a low level library similar to TFT_eSPI which supports ED097OC4 (9.7″), ED060SC4 (6″), ED097TC2 (9.7″) and ED133UT2 (13.3″) screens.

Technical specifications of the TTGO T5-4.7

The choice of an ePaper screen is not without consequence on the inputs / outputs used. Indeed, the screen alone monopolizes 8 pins of the ESP32 (2, 4, 19, 21, 22, 27, 32, 33) for the SPI bus. This is not scandalous, but it must be taken into account in his project especially as the T5-4.7 exposes only 6 pins of the ESP32.

Lilygo has opted for the same strategy as M5Stack and placing 3 Molex 4 pole connectors (53015-0410). It’s a real shame not to have opted for a Grove connector, it would have made it possible to take advantage of the many existing expansion boards. Well, we can always tinker with jumpers, but it’s still a problem.

There are Molex to Grove converters out there, but that adds up to the price. Hopefully LilyGo will change standard in the future …

 

You can choose between two versions of the map. The first equipped with a PH2.0 connector will power the board using a LiPo battery. A charging circuit is present on the board but the reference is not specified. The second version will power the T5-4.7 using an 18650 battery. Please note, it is not specified whether the charging circuit will allow the 18650 battery to be recharged via the USB-C socket. Be careful. . The two versions are marketed at the same price of € 21.56 (excluding shipping costs) from today on AliExpress.

The new T5-4.7 with its large screen clearly targets the home automation dashboard market. It is a more economical board than the M5Paper but we regret certain technical choices (absence of SD card reader, Molex connector, no GPIO) which risks cooling some Makers.
